Oh... those Karachiites!

'Sacrifice the unimportant for the important.’ Tough a schoolteacher of mine used to repeat this sentence quite often, I never considered it worthwhile until 12th May, 2007, when I found many practical applications of this in Karachi and Islamabad.

There was a big, massive, mighty, enormous and huge rally of a pro-government party in Islamabad.

A grand stage was set up at the end of the Blue Area outside the President House. People from all over the province, no, country, nah! World (so sad, scientists have not yet confirmed life on Mars!) came to visit Islamabad to demonstrate their affection for the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

My English exam was on 12th May. A night before, I heard that it had been postponed till I don’t-know-when due to this rally. I was lost! I had been preparing for five days, day and night, for it! I asked a professor of my college on phone. He said, 'Well, it was on the TV that it has been cancelled! After all, son, there are many more 'important’ events going on all around the country than these papers!’

In the morning, I called the Federal Board Office, but the phone was constantly busy. They, too, had probably gone to participate in the rally. After all, it was much more 'important’ than the 'unimportant’ tasks they do in their offices. The news of postponement of the exam was not even on the website of Federal Board. Ah... who cares, anyway!

Meanwhile, there was another rally organised by yet another pro-government political party going in Karachi, too.

Then, the opposition parties decided to imitate that other party and organised their own stupid rally. Couldn’t they sacrifice their 'unimportant’ rally for the 'important’ rally of the pro-government party?

The city was sealed. Only the Lord knows by whom! May be the angels did it! Almost all the main roads were blocked by huge trailers to prevent people from going anywhere in the city. Good thing, actually! It secured the innocent pro-government party’s rally from the noxious people of the city.

Everywhere in the city, that party’s flags could be seen. Boys riding motorbikes, holding both: the flags and the guns. They could be seen firing in the air every now and then. Awe... such good boys! They wanted to wake the notorious sleeping-in-the-day Karachiites up to watch the rallies on their TVs. Pious boys, doing pious deeds! Once again, people should sacrifice their 'unimportant’ sleep for the 'important’ rally.

Then, the lawyers and even the judges were not allowed to go to the High Court. First, the blockades (they were natural actually, not man-made). Then, there were some other boys who were trying to do social work. They snatched mobile phones from the lawyers to protect them from the deadly rays that affect the heartbeat. Such philanthropist boys, isn’t it?

Soon, the CJ along with his lawyers landed in Karachi and the opposition started its 'politicisation of a judicial issue’. Therefore, it was the responsibility of that party to keep the opposition parties away from the airport. Many people died in those clashes between the 'peaceful’ party and the 'terrorist’ opposition. So what? Again that 'important’ and 'unimportant’ thing!

A hospital was fired with latest weapons. No police was there! No rangers! Only the hospital staff! And why? It was the mistake of the hospital crew. Who asked them to go to work that day? They should have stayed at home and watched the government rallies. People die daily! Who cares? But these felicitous rallies are rare! Very rare! But those fools didn’t differentiate between 'important’ and 'unimportant’.

Then a very hilarious event took place at a TV station in Karachi. The office was fired upon. It started at about 12:30 p.m. and continued till about 07:00p.m. The parking area was completely destroyed and the vehicles parked there were torched. Hah! Cowardly journalists! Didn’t face the music! The rangers came after some hours (not many, just some hours), but the armed extremists started throwing lethal stones at the innocent rangers. They should have done what they actually did. Run for their lives! Refresh my memory, please. What percentage of the budget goes to the armed forces of Pakistan? At the end of the day, the police came and was led by an armed extremist to the main gate of the office. The firing had stopped!

The death toll for the whole day was 34. Shocking! But you know, you have to sacrifice some 'unimportant’ things for 'important’ things.

The whole day the Karachiites cried for help. The dead bodies remained scattered on the roads like insects. No law-enforcing agency was present in the city. What was the government doing?

Silly Karachiites! The answer was simple. The government was too busy with an important rally in Islamabad. Had no time for the unimportant, useless people!

The whole day Karachi cried. They kept on requesting the authorities to come and help them. Hah! Brainless Karachiites! What did they expect? The President of Pakistan would come himself just for a temporary situation? Ha ha ha! Too funny!

President Musharraf had such a huge rally to attend there in Islamabad. As I already said, people die daily. So what? The population keep increasing every day. New ones are born. Hisaab barabar! The President took the right step; he simply ignored those childish Karachiites. Karachi was literally burning, but who cared?

Nero was also playing a flute when Rome was burning. What the hell is wrong if President Musharraf did so? But those goofy Karachiites! Always making a fuss around! Exasperating the government always! And at last, I would raise a slogan for our beloved President for running such an extraordinary government in the country.

President Musharraf, Zindabaad!!!
